The found-guilty plotter – who has been living under home confinement in his estate while a number of legal procedures and challenges unfold – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the next few days, amidst mounting talk that he will be transferred to a well-known high-security prison.

Historical Comments on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the right-wing former military man displayed little sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.

“Why should we give those dirtbags a easy time?” he once mused. “They deserve to be messed, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to wind up in prison, you simply need is not rape, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Location Debate

But the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, four of whom this week inspected the prison in an apparent effort to dissuade the judiciary from sending him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, stated he expected the elderly leader to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious gut issues – the outcome of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 political campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is very grave. He cannot to manage if they take him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the quality of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells accommodating forty detainees: “That is practically one square meter per inmate.

“We talked to the prisoners and they protest, naturally, of the awful food,” remarked the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

The senator isn't the sole person voicing opinions prior to the ex-leader's expected detention.

Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to get dignified care – but dignified handling behind bars. He cannot carry on being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have long praising the severe treatment of inmates, had unexpectedly woken up to their entitlements. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has always claimed that human rights are not for offenders – chosen to visit a prison to find out what conditions are truly like,” he stated.

“He is a offender,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, degrading treatment”.

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently contains about fourteen thousand inmates, his expected location appears to be a nearby jail for officers and other “particular” prisoners known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

The accommodations are much more pleasant than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the spectacular leader's home, approximately a short distance away.

As per information, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – roughly the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 square meter WC with a shower and a 130 square foot balcony. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a set and additionally a cooler in his cell as long as they were provided by his family,” sources indicated.
