We are analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location of where the images were from relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
