Line of Duty Confirmed for 7th Season on BBC
The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."
The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."
New Character and Complex Case
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.
However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.
The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
