Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD shared security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
