Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.
The victims have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She described the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
