Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Halted Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company Unilever prevented the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he will independently develop the controversial flavor within a personal collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing disagreement among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated via social media how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally created several years back for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts and Future Plans
Mr. Cohen stated how he will create additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, after many years of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
