The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

The fashion world says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
