Accused Bondi Beach Gunmen Operated Solo and Did Not Instruction in the Philippines, Investigators Confirm.

The two alleged attackers who carried out the lethal shooting at a Jewish event on Bondi Beach, that took 15 lives, are believed to have been lone actors, per national law enforcement.

Investigators further stated that the 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram travelled to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary involved arriving in the main city Manila before traveling onward on the day of arrival to Davao City. The father and son flew back to Sydney on 29 November.

No Evidence of Planning During Trip

Investigators assert the duo did not partake in any form of terrorist training or "planning" during their time in the Philippines. Initial inquiries from Philippine officials point to they "hardly ventured out of" their accommodation.

The attack—labeled as Australia's worst firearm massacre since 1996—has been formally designated a act of terrorism.

"We are currently examining the footage," she stated, explaining that early reviews show that "the alleged offenders are alleged to have been lone actors."

National law enforcement Commissioner Krissy Barrett informed reporters on Tuesday that CCTV footage tracking the accused attackers' movements in the Philippines had been handed over to Australian investigators.

"Our investigation shows little to no indication to indicate these alleged offenders were members of a wider network, or were directed by others to perpetrate an incident," the police chief stated.

Yet, the men were also not necessarily in the Philippines as tourists, she clarified. She underscored that, as the investigation is ongoing, new evidence may come to light.

Motivation and Court Charges

In prior statements, the nation's leader Anthony Albanese said it looks as though both alleged gunmen were "influenced by ISIS" ideology.

During the attack, Sajid Akram was killed by responding officers. He and his son Naveed—both armed with rifles—allegedly shot attendees at the Jewish festival event.

Naveed Akram, who was hospitalised after the shooting, has been formally accused of 59 charges. These encompass 15 charges of murder and one count of carrying out a terrorist act. He is due to appear in court in April.

Travel Information

In the days following the attack, immigration authorities in the Philippines reported that the older suspect had arrived in the country using an foreign passport, while his son used an Australian passport.

The two had stated the metropolis of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their pre-arranged return flight to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a large city on the eastern side of Mindanao, the Philippines' largest southern island. It is noted that, Militant groups have been known to operate in poorer parts of southern and western Mindanao.
